If your license was suspended after a DUI arrest in Colorado, you’re probably wondering what comes next—and how to get back on the road legally. The Colorado DMV DUI reinstatement process can be confusing, especially if you’re navigating it for the first time. This guide breaks down the steps, timelines, and requirements so you know exactly what to expect and how to reinstate your driver’s license.
What Triggers a License Suspension After a DUI in Colorado?
In Colorado, you can lose your license in two ways after a DUI arrest:
Administrative Suspension by the DMV – This happens automatically if you:
Fail a chemical test (BAC 0.08 or higher)
Refuse to take a test
Court-Ordered Suspension – If you’re convicted in criminal court, the judge may impose a separate suspension, depending on your record and the offense level.
Both can result in a revoked or suspended license, and both need to be resolved before you can legally drive again.
Step 1: Understand Your Suspension Length
Your suspension period depends on your DUI history:
First Offense (BAC 0.08 or more): 9-month suspension
Refusal to Test: 1-year suspension
Second DUI Offense: 1-year suspension
Third or More DUI Offenses: 2+ years
You may be eligible for early reinstatement with an ignition interlock device (IID), but not in all cases.
Step 2: Wait Out the Required Suspension Period (or Apply Early)
You must serve at least one month of your suspension (on a first offense) before you can apply for early reinstatement. This includes:
No driving at all during this “hard stop” period
You can apply for reinstatement on day 31 if eligible
Those with more than one offense typically need to wait longer before they can apply for early reinstatement.
Step 3: Enroll in the Required Alcohol Education or Treatment Program
Before reinstatement, you must enroll in or complete the necessary Level II Alcohol Education and Therapy classes. This is often required by both the court and DMV.
First-time offenders usually complete Level II Education (12 sessions)
Repeat offenders or high BAC cases may require Level II Therapy (up to 86 sessions)
Ask your attorney or the DMV what’s required for your specific case.
Step 4: Install an Ignition Interlock Device (IID)
For most reinstatements, especially early ones, Colorado law requires an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) in your vehicle.
Schedule an appointment with a state-approved IID provider
Have the device installed and get proof of installation
You’ll be required to maintain the IID for at least 8 months (first offense) or up to 2 years (multiple offenses)
Make sure your IID provider sends verification to the DMV.
Step 5: File the SR-22 Insurance Form
The SR-22 is not insurance, but a certificate proving that your insurance meets Colorado’s high-risk driver requirements. Your insurance company must file this form directly with the DMV.
Required for up to 3 years after DUI reinstatement
Canceling your SR-22 coverage early can result in re-suspension
Shop around for insurance carriers who specialize in SR-22 policies if your current provider doesn’t offer it.
Step 6: Apply for License Reinstatement
Once you’ve completed the steps above, you can officially apply to reinstate your Colorado driver’s license.
Here’s what you’ll need:
Proof of IID installation
Proof of SR-22 insurance
Reinstatement fee (around $95, subject to change)
Any required documents from your alcohol education program
You can apply:
Online at myDMV.Colorado.gov
By mail (using the application form)
In person at select DMV locations
Step 7: Follow Up and Maintain Compliance
Once you’re reinstated:
You’ll receive a restricted license tied to your IID
You must stay compliant with IID rules, including passing tests and attending service appointments
Violations can reset your interlock period or re-suspend your license
Your DMV record will still show the DUI, but over time, you may regain full driving privileges without restrictions—if you stay compliant and avoid further offenses.
